You have a website, but customers can't find you? It's probably missing SEO. That's short for Search Engine Optimization — optimizing for search engines. In plain terms: a set of practices that get your business to rank higher on Google when customers search for what you offer. Here's how it works, without the technical jargon.
How does Google decide who ranks at the top?
When someone types "web design agency Warsaw" into Google, the search engine scans millions of pages in a fraction of a second and ranks them from most to least relevant. It weighs hundreds of factors, but they boil down to three questions:
- Does this page match the query? (content relevance)
- Can it be trusted? (authority and quality)
- Is it good to use? (speed, mobile version, security)
SEO is simply the work of making sure your site answers "yes" to each of these.
The three pillars of SEO
1. Technical SEO
This is the foundation. Google has to be able to find, read, and quickly load your site. Key factors include:
- loading speed (Core Web Vitals),
- a correct mobile version,
- a clear URL structure and sitemap,
- no errors that block indexing.
2. Content (on-page)
Google ranks content that answers users' questions. That's why these matter so much:
- relevant keywords in titles and headings,
- valuable, unique text (like blog articles such as this one),
- service descriptions focused on the customer's real needs.
3. Authority (off-page)
These are signals from outside your site that build trust — above all, links from other websites, along with reviews and mentions of your business. The more credible sources "recommend" your site, the higher Google ranks it.
How long until SEO works?
This is the most important thing to remember: SEO is a marathon, not a sprint. The first results usually show up after 3–6 months, with the full effect after a year or more. In return, you get traffic you don't pay for per click — unlike ads.
SEO and AI search engines
There's a new dimension emerging: more and more people are asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews instead. These tools also draw on well-optimized, credible content. Solid SEO makes it easier not just for classic search engines to find your business, but for AI too.
